Joe Biden, 83 years old and facing one of the toughest battles of his life, stood for hours as the names of those lost on September 11 were read aloud.

Despite undergoing treatment for an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, Biden attended the Ground Zero commemoration and remained there through the lengthy reading of victims’ names.

Meanwhile, images and video of President Donald Trump at the Pentagon ceremony have sparked a completely different conversation, with critics saying he appeared to struggle to stay awake during portions of the solemn event.

For many people, the contrast was impossible to ignore.

September 11 isn’t about Republicans or Democrats. It’s about the nearly 3,000 lives that were taken, the families who still carry that loss, and the first responders who ran toward danger when everyone else was trying to escape.

At an event carrying that much pain and history, Americans expect their leaders to understand the weight of the moment.

Whatever your politics, respect for the victims should never be optional
